Guided tour of The Jay Estate and Heritage Center
Located in Rye, The Jay Estate is a landmark on New York State’s Path Through History.
The Jay Estate in Rye is the childhood home of one of our nation’s leaders and Founding Fathers, John Jay. Join us for a guided tour of the 1838 mansion inclusive of architectural and historic details - everything from John Jay's career and life, his connection to slavery and freedom.
After the tour, you are welcome to join us for lunch at Rye Grill and Bar (1 Station Plaza, Rye, NY 10580). [Lunch will be pay as you go.]
Jay served as a spymaster during the Revolutionary War; as a diplomat and Minister to Spain; as a negotiator of the Treaty of Paris and the Jay Treaty; as an architect of our state’s constitution; as an author of the Federalist Papers; as our first United States Chief Justice; as Governor of New York State; and as an anti-slavery advocate who founded the New York Society for the Manumission of Slaves and signed the Gradual Emancipation Act into law.
The house is an official project of the Save America’s Treasures Program and at 176 years old, it is the oldest National Historic Landmark structure in New York State to be using an energy efficient geothermal heating and cooling system. In 2009 it was designated as an important site in the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area list because of its architectural significance, exploration of themes of freedom and dignity and best green management practices. It is also 1 of 13 sites on the African American Heritage Trail of Westchester County. This historic 23 acre oasis, once part of an expansive 400 acre farm, still boasts a magnificent view to Long Island Sound.
